There’s power in numbers. This certainly holds true when it comes to group therapy. As the name suggests, group therapy involves a small group of 5 to 15 people who come together for counseling with one or more therapists.
The purpose of group counseling is to create a safe, supportive environment where people can discuss their issues without fear of being judged. Many therapists use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) during group sessions to help participants become aware of inaccurate or negative ways of thinking, which often contribute to addiction.
Group counseling is useful on its own, but it’s even more effective as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes one-on-one therapy sessions and other therapies and activities.
Research shows group therapy helps people in a variety of ways. Here are some of the benefits:
In addiction therapy settings, groups typically meet once a day, for 1 to 2 hours. The therapist or counselor leads group discussions and activities, and everyone has the chance to talk and share when they’re ready.
Not everyone will be comfortable speaking in group sessions, especially at the beginning of treatment. For this reason, many treatment facilities start with one-on-one therapy sessions and then add in group therapy sessions to a client’s treatment schedule as the person becomes more comfortable talking and sharing.
No one is forced to speak during group therapy sessions, and people can share as much or as little about themselves as they’re comfortable with. But every participant can feel secure in knowing that what they say in group, stays in group.
The seating arrangement in group meetings is usually configured in a circle of chairs. This allows everyone to see and hear each other clearly. Sessions may take place indoors or in a relaxing outdoor setting, like a public park or beach.
Group counseling sessions usually start with members introducing themselves. They may also share why they are there and the progress they have made since the last group meeting.
The format of group therapy sessions will depend on the therapist’s style and the group’s goals. Some therapists create a plan for each meeting, which may include team building or growth activities. Others prefer a more free-form style.
