Long-Term Addiction Treatment Programs in Orange County, CA

When you decide to get help for addiction you’re faced with many decisions, including where to go for treatment and for how long.

There are many treatment options available today to accommodate different circumstances. These include outpatient programs, which allow you to live at home; partial hospitalization programs (also known as day treatment); and residential inpatient treatment.

While most rehab programs last from 30-60 days, long-term addiction treatment programs are different. They extend well beyond the shorter timeframe of the typical rehab program—usually for 3-12 months or more.

Patients in long-term treatment start with medically supervised detox to clear the body of substances and manage withdrawal symptoms. Detox can take a few days to a few weeks. After detox, patients move into residential treatment and are closely monitored around the clock, especially in the first 30-60 days of treatment.

Long-term programs are generally very structured, with activities planned each day. But as patients progress in their treatment, they may be allowed more freedoms and privileges.

People with severe addictions and a history of relapse or trauma often need long-term drug rehab. Long-term programs provide the peer support, structure, and time many people need to confidently resume life outside of treatment.

People who have co-occurring mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or bipolar disorder may also need long-term treatment. Mental health disorders can be very destabilizing, and people struggling with mental health challenges may need more time in a structured environment before they’re ready to return to pretreatment life.

Everyone progresses through addiction treatment at their own pace, and there’s no one-size-fits-all program. But research has shown—unequivocally—that treatment programs lasting fewer than 90 days are not as effective as longer-term programs. This is true for both residential and outpatient programs.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says, “Treatment lasting significantly longer [than 90 days] is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes. For methadone maintenance, 12 months is considered the minimum, and some opioid-addicted individuals continue to benefit from methadone maintenance for many years.”

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) also recommends long-term treatment for opioid addiction, since relapse rates are higher with short-term treatment programs.

After detox, you will move into residential treatment. Here you will get to know the rest of the treatment team and your treatment peers. Once you have settled in you will begin participating in rehab services and activities, which may include:

Our drug and alcohol rehab programs are based on the latest science and our treatment team’s experience about what works best to help people get and stay sober. Some of the evidence-based therapies we use include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy
  • Rational emotive behavioral therapy
  • Multimodal therapy
  • Medication-assisted therapies
  • 12-step facilitation

Long-term addiction treatment is focused on helping you identify the core beliefs and thought patterns that often underlie addiction behaviors.

You will work with addiction specialists, licensed therapists, and your peers to find healthy ways of managing stress, uncertainty, and unhelpful thoughts and beliefs.

Your days in treatment will be structured with treatment activities, appointments, and holistic therapies—all designed to help you meet your recovery goals.

Given their duration, long-term inpatient treatment programs are typically more costly than short-term rehab programs. But it’s a potentially life-saving investment.

People who need long-term treatment often have a history of relapse, and each time a person relapses their health and well-being are in danger. Addiction is itself expensive, especially if you or a loved one have incurred legal costs or lost a job because of substance abuse.

Insurance may cover part of your treatment, but you should plan to pay for much of your treatment out of pocket, since most insurance companies cap the number of treatment days they will cover.
