Serving as the Director of Admissions and Marketing, Terry brings over 30 years of management and a decade of professional treatment experience to Adelante Recovery Centers. A former producer and filmmaker before his addiction, Terry holds an AA degree in liberal arts and a BA in Film from the University of California, Berkeley.
As a recovering addict himself, Terry has witnessed, firsthand, how addiction can relentlessly and viciously destroy the lives it touches. Perhaps the most impactful chapter in Terry’s journey came after rebuilding his entire life from the wreckage of addiction only to be destroyed twice over again in relapse. Witnessing and surviving such an impossible experience has instilled in him an unshakable commitment to making a difference.
In his role in admissions, Terry finds great purpose in providing help to addicts and their families during their most vulnerable and chaotic moments – when first reaching out for help. The opportunity to guide people who are lost and suffering towards hope and healing is profoundly rewarding for Terry, and a responsibility he sees more as a duty than a career choice.
Hailing from Southern California, Terry’s roots are firmly planted in the Inland Empire. Although he spent time in the Bay Area during his film school years, he returned home to establish a life with his family, remaining close to his loved ones. He shares his life with his girlfriend and teenage son, his beloved dog Blue, who played a pivotal role in his early recovery, and his rescued cat Loki.
Outside of work, Terry enjoys spending time with his family, building things with his son and staying creative with videography using his coveted new drone. Proudly, the Patton family embrace their inner geek, finding fascination in all things tech and science including a passion for Star Wars and Marvel. He along with his family find great inspiration from the world of art music and photography.
With a passion for psychology, especially adolescent mental health, Terry is an outspoken advocate for a greater, more informed, more evolved and more effective mental health system in our country. To this end, Terry hopes to continue his education at some point and earn his PhD in psychology.
When it comes to earning the respect of clients, Terry’s approach is simple: to be the same as they are. In his own words, “I was traumatized by the destructive force of my addiction. I had no idea that I was capable of such self destruction, such horrible behavior and yet be so powerless to stop it no matter who I hurt or how much I suffered. We all deserve a chance at renewal and reclaiming our lives.”
Informed by this traumatic experience, Terry approaches his clients as a judgeless fellow addict, fostering self-forgiveness and as much human decency as possible. “I am just like them—a good person battling a difficult situation, and with help, they can get through it.”
